If there were a phrase like bah humbug for Thanksgiving I'd be saying it. I know, many people love this fall holiday overshadowed by its seasonal siblings Halloween and Christmas, and commercially passed over for Black Friday, but I do not. Despite the delicious tradition of roast turkey and the lack of gifting pressure to recommend it, the holiday depresses me.
How I Failed My Way into Writing Books

March 24, 2021. My family and I were enjoying dinner after a show. I was working two jobs at the time, plus making my first feature film. After years of planning, I had shot most of it with the best cast anyone could have asked for, and magic had been made. I had brought my laptop and hard drive with me, hoping I could get some more editing done in the three-and-a-half-hour drive both to and from the show, but we were all in the moment and enjoying each other's company, so no editing had been done thus far on the trip.

Agatha Christie Play The Mousetrap On Stage At Encore, With a Special Bonus

I have been a fan of Agatha Christie since I was a teenager, so when I heard that Encore Theatre in Tulare was producing her famous play, The Mousetrap, I knew I had to see it. But it also sparked another idea. I reached out to Encore and asked if I could come to one of their performances and talk about mysteries and sign and sell my Tower District Mysteries. They said yes. So at the 2 p.m. matinee performance of The Mousetrap on November 9, I will be doing a brief talk and Q&A about writing mysteries, and about my books, after the show. I will also have copies of both books for sale at that performance.

Spooky October Movies—No Screaming Necessary

October is a time when all the spooky comes out—decorations, costumes, and movies. I have compiled a small list of some of my favorite spooky. They may be thought of as horror movies, but they aren’t blood-and-guts fests. These are films I have seen, which leaves out some popular films like Monster Squad and Hocus Pocus. Most of these are pretty old, and not too violent. (I have a problem with slasher-monster-jump scare films.)

Rattie Ratz, A Forever Home of One’s Own: The Journey of Harris & Oliver

Sometimes it takes a couple of tries to find your place in the world, and whether you walk on two legs or four, we all want the same thing––a place to call home. When two rattie brothers made their way to Rattie Ratz Rescue, a home of their own is exactly what they needed. The boys were surrendered to the rescue (along with their four young brothers) in December 2023 where they briefly enjoyed the names Grinch and Kevin.

I start this column with a story that is just unbelievable! So it is a busy morning because several cats are leaving and going to rescue. There is the usual bump in the road–– one of the candidates has diarrhea and must be bumped and another cat chosen. Now I have to find that cat’s paperwork. So I’m also rushing around scooping boxes and filling water/food bowls because I’ll be gone all day.
